LLM SEO: How to Get AI Models to Cite Your Brand

Hand holding a glowing phone in the dark

LLM SEO is the work of making your brand easy for large language models to find, understand and recommend. It covers the same ground as classic SEO, plus one big shift: you are no longer only trying to rank a page, you are trying to be the source an AI model quotes when it writes an answer. This guide explains how LLMs pick their sources and the practical steps that improve your odds.

What LLM SEO means

Large language models, or LLMs, power tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews. When someone asks them a question, they answer in two ways:

  • From memory. The model draws on what it learned during training. You influence this slowly, through what the wider web says about you over time.
  • From live search. The tool searches the web, reads a few pages and writes an answer with citations. You influence this much faster, through the same signals that drive search rankings.

LLM SEO works on both. It sits alongside AI SEO and generative engine optimization (GEO); the labels overlap, and the work is largely the same.

How LLMs choose which sources to cite

No AI company publishes a full ranking formula, but their documentation and citation studies point to a consistent pattern.

SignalWhat it means in practice
AccessThe tool’s crawler can reach and read the page. OpenAI says sites that opt out of its OAI-SearchBot crawler “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.”
IndexingThe page is in the search indexes the tool draws on. Google says a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet” to appear in its AI features.
RelevanceThe page directly answers the narrow question the tool searched for, not a broad version of it.
QuotabilityShort, self-contained passages with a clear answer, numbers and named methods are easier to lift into an answer.
CorroborationOther sites, reviews and discussions say the same thing about you, so the model can state it with confidence.

The LLM SEO checklist

1. Technical access

  • Allow OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot in robots.txt and in your firewall or CDN settings.
  • Decide separately whether to allow training crawlers such as GPTBot. Blocking training does not remove you from ChatGPT search.
  • Serve your main content in plain HTML. Content that only appears after heavy scripts or behind tabs is harder for crawlers to read.
  • Keep a clean XML sitemap and turn on IndexNow so Bing hears about updates quickly.

2. Entity clarity

An entity is a thing a model can recognize: your company, your founders, your services, your location. The clearer the entity, the more confidently a model can describe you.

  • Use one consistent company name, description and service list across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
  • Add Organization structured data with your address, contact details, founders and links to your official profiles.
  • Publish an About page that says who you are, where you work, who you serve and what you have done, in plain language.

3. Answer-first content

  • Open each page and section with the direct answer in one or two sentences, then explain.
  • Write headings as the questions buyers ask: “How much does SEO cost in South Africa?” beats “Our pricing philosophy.”
  • Include specifics a model can quote: prices, timeframes, steps, results and definitions.
  • Give each core question one clear home page. Our keyword mapping guide explains how to stop two pages competing for the same answer.

4. Third-party proof

Models trust what other sources confirm. Ahrefs’ September 2026 tracking of ChatGPT citations found Reddit and Wikipedia at the top, with review sites, publishers, YouTube and retailers close behind. (Ahrefs, Most cited domains in ChatGPT) For a business, that means:

  • Listings on the directories and “best of” roundups your buyers read.
  • Reviews on Google and on industry review platforms.
  • Genuine participation in the forums and communities where your topic is discussed.
  • Expert quotes and guest articles on respected industry sites.

5. Freshness and accuracy

Keep facts current. If your prices, services or locations change, update every page and profile that mentions them. Out-of-date information on your own site can be repeated by an AI tool long after you have moved on.

What LLM SEO is not

  • Not a trick file. An llms.txt file can help some tools summarize your site, but Google says you do not need “new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup” to appear in its AI features.
  • Not keyword stuffing. Repeating phrases does not make a model trust you. Clear answers and outside proof do.
  • Not separate from SEO. Crawling, indexing, relevance and authority still decide most outcomes. LLM SEO adds weight to quotability and third-party mentions.

How to measure LLM SEO

  1. Build a list of 20 to 30 prompts your buyers would use, from “what is” questions to “best agency for” questions.
  2. Run them monthly in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.
  3. Track three outcomes per prompt: cited with a link, mentioned without a link, or missing.
  4. Note which sources are cited instead of you; they become your outreach and content targets.
  5. Watch referral visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com in your analytics.

Frequently asked questions

Is LLM SEO the same as AEO or GEO?

They describe the same goal from slightly different angles. AEO (answer engine optimization) focuses on being the answer, GEO focuses on generative search tools, and LLM SEO focuses on the models behind them. The practical work is almost identical.

Does traditional SEO still matter for LLMs?

Yes. AI tools that search the web pick from pages that are already crawlable, indexed and trusted. Strong classic SEO is the base that LLM visibility sits on.

How quickly can LLM SEO work?

Citations in AI search can change within weeks of fixing access and publishing clear answers. How a model describes you from memory changes more slowly, as new training data reflects what the web says about you.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

It depends on your goals. Blocking training crawlers protects content from model training. Blocking search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot removes you from AI answers, which most businesses do not want.
