How to Rank in ChatGPT: A Practical Guide for Businesses

You rank in ChatGPT by being the source it finds, trusts and can quote when it searches the web for your buyer’s question. There is no ChatGPT ranking dashboard and no paid placement in its organic answers. What you can control is whether OpenAI’s crawler can reach your site, whether your pages answer the exact questions buyers ask, and whether other trusted sites mention you. This guide walks through each step in the order we use with clients.

How ChatGPT decides what to show

ChatGPT answers many questions from what the model already learned in training. When a question needs current or specific information, it runs a web search, reads the results and writes an answer with citations.

OpenAI’s own help page explains the search side. ChatGPT “typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries,” sends them to its search partners, then ranks what comes back “using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information.” It also says plainly that “placement is not guaranteed.” (OpenAI, ChatGPT search)

That gives you two ways in:

  • The search layer. Your page is found and cited when ChatGPT searches. This is where most businesses can win in weeks, not years.
  • The training layer. Your brand is described correctly from memory because it appears consistently across the web. This builds slowly and is shaped by everything written about you, not just your own site.

Step 1: Let OpenAI’s search crawler in

OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs. The one that matters for ranking is OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI states that “sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.” (OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI crawlers)

Crawler What it does Block it?
OAI-SearchBot Finds pages to show in ChatGPT search No, if you want to be cited
GPTBot Collects content that may train future models Your choice; blocking it does not remove you from search
ChatGPT-User Visits a page when a user asks ChatGPT to open it No; it is not used to decide what appears in search

Check three places: your robots.txt file, any security plugin or firewall rules, and your CDN bot settings. We regularly find sites that block OpenAI by accident through a firewall default, then wonder why they never appear.

Step 2: Make sure the search partners can find you

ChatGPT search relies on partner search providers as well as its own crawler. OpenAI does not publish the full list, but Bing is widely reported to be one of them, so being properly indexed in Bing is cheap insurance.

  • Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your XML sitemap. If you are unsure yours is clean, our guide to XML sitemaps covers what belongs in it.
  • Turn on IndexNow so new and updated pages are announced to Bing within minutes. Most SEO plugins, including Rank Math, support it.
  • Fix indexing gaps in Google too. If key pages show as “Crawled, currently not indexed”, AI tools that lean on search results will rarely see them either.

Step 3: Answer the questions buyers actually type

ChatGPT rewrites a user’s prompt into narrower searches. A prompt like “who should I hire to fix my site’s SEO in Cape Town” may become searches for “SEO agency Cape Town reviews” and “SEO agency pricing South Africa.” Your pages need to answer those narrow searches directly.

  1. List the questions. Pull them from sales calls, client emails, Google’s “People also ask” boxes and your own site search. Write them down in the buyer’s words.
  2. Map one main question to one page. Service and comparison questions belong on service pages. “How” and “why” questions belong in guides. Our keyword mapping guide shows how to avoid two pages competing for the same question.
  3. Answer in the first two sentences. State the answer, then explain. AI tools quote short, self-contained passages far more than long introductions.
  4. Use specifics. Prices, timeframes, locations, numbers and named methods give the model something concrete to cite. “Retainers from $1,500 a month” beats “affordable pricing.”

Step 4: Get mentioned where ChatGPT already looks

ChatGPT cites some sources far more than others. Ahrefs’ tracking of US ChatGPT citations for September 2026 put Reddit first at 16.8% of citations among the top sources, followed by Wikipedia at 7.0%, with review sites, publishers, YouTube and retailers making up much of the rest. (Ahrefs, Most cited domains in ChatGPT)

The same list includes sites with modest authority, which suggests relevance matters more than raw domain strength. In practice that means:

  • Be on the lists. “Best agencies” roundups, directories such as Clutch and industry associations are exactly the pages ChatGPT reads for “who should I hire” questions.
  • Be in the discussions. Helpful, honest answers in the Reddit and LinkedIn threads your buyers read, with no hard selling.
  • Be reviewed. Reviews on Google and third-party platforms give the model independent proof that you exist and do good work.
  • Be consistent. Use the same company name, description, address and service list everywhere. Mixed signals make it harder for a model to describe you with confidence.

Step 5: Make your site easy to understand

Clear structure helps every search engine, AI or not. Google itself says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode,” and that the same SEO best practices apply. (Google Search Central, AI features and your website) The basics still do the heavy lifting:

  • One clear H1 per page that names the topic.
  • Descriptive headings that read like the questions people ask.
  • Structured data for your organization, services, FAQs and articles.
  • Fast, crawlable HTML that does not hide the main content behind scripts or logins.
  • An author or team page that shows who wrote the content and why they know the subject.

Step 6: Measure what ChatGPT says about you

You cannot see ChatGPT rankings in a tool the way you see Google positions, so measure it directly.

  1. Write 20 to 30 prompts a real buyer would use, from “what is” questions to “who is the best agency for” questions.
  2. Run them monthly in ChatGPT with search on, and note whether you are mentioned, cited with a link, or missing.
  3. Record which competitors and sources appear instead. Those sources are your outreach list.
  4. Check referral traffic from chatgpt.com in your analytics. It is usually small at first but tends to convert well.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to rank in ChatGPT?

Not in its organic answers. OpenAI has launched advertising in ChatGPT, but ads are separate from the cited answers and are labeled. If you want to test ads, our ChatGPT ads team can help; organic visibility still comes from the steps above.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

Search citations can change within weeks once a page is crawlable, indexed and clearly answers a question. Changing how the model describes your brand from memory takes much longer, because it depends on training updates and on what the wider web says about you.

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my ChatGPT visibility?

Blocking GPTBot stops your content being used to train future models. According to OpenAI, it is OAI-SearchBot that controls whether you can appear in ChatGPT search answers, so the two are separate decisions.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It is optional. It can help some AI tools summarize your site, but Google says you do not need special AI files to appear in its AI features, and OpenAI does not list it as a requirement. Treat it as a small extra, not a ranking factor.

Is ranking in ChatGPT different from ranking in Google?

The foundations overlap heavily: crawlable pages, clear answers, authority and trust. The difference is that ChatGPT leans more on third-party mentions and quotable passages, and it often names only a handful of sources per answer.
